- Fei and Aslan gave talks at the 2022 World Fuel Cell Conference at the University of California, Irvine. They visited the National Fuel Cell Research Center at UCI and learned about the ongoing projects ranging from single-cell characterization to automotive applications and system-level grid integration. Fei won the Best Student Presentation Award for his talk, and Aslan was nominated for the Best Overall Presentation Award.

- Aslan, Michael and Jiafei attended the Gordon Research Seminar (23 to 24th July 2022) and Gordon Research conference (24 to 29th July 2022) in Smithfield, RI. Aslan received the best presentation award at the Fuel Cell GRS and the first prize for his poster at the Fuel Cell GRC. Fei could not attend the conference, hence Jiafei presented Fei's poster (middle picture). The person on the right in the third picture is Sadia Kabir, Staff Scientist at Twelve.

- Mayank and Aslan took part in the Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar 2018 in Smithfield, RI. Mayank had an oral presentation in GRS and a poster presentation in GRS/GRC. The topic of his presentation was "Impact of local saturation on gas transport and performance of fuel cell electrodes". Aslan was a discussion leader in GRS and had a poster presentation in GRS/GRC. His topic was "An Open-Source Multiscale Dynamic Model for Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells". Marc Secanell was a vice chair for this year's GRC.

- Yu Morimoto and Masao Shibata of Toyota Central R&D Labs (Japan) visited ESDLab on May 11, 2018. Fuel Cells R&D Director and his colleague presented the current status of the fuel cell technology development at Toyota and gave an internal perspective on the company's commercially available fuel cell car Toyota Mirai. In the atmosphere of mutual knowledge exchange, ESDL members also shared the recent results in their fuel cell and electrolyzer research and gave a tour of the lab for the guests from Toyota.

Jie Zhou and Alex Jarauta joined him in the trip to Vancouver, presenting their work in the analysis of the role of MPL through two-phase simulations and in the numerical study of water droplet dynamics in fuel cell channels.

They did not miss a chance to reunite with ESDLab alumnus Kailyn Domican (now with Ballard Power Systems) and two ESDLab members, Shantanu Shukla and Aslan Kosakian, who are currently working at the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation Corporation (AFCC) in Burnaby.

- Fraunhofer UMSICHT representatives visited the ESDLab in order to start a collaborative project in bipolar plate characterization and in-situ testing. The new, flexible plates would enable rapid prototyping of fuel cell bipolar plates at ESDLab.

- A poster co-authored by ESDL postdoctoral fellow Shantanu Shukla won the "most interesting work" prize at the 1st Annual Innovation Project Fair at AFCC, Vancouver. The poster "Development of next generation catalyst layer" presented the research conducted by Dr. Shukla in collaboration with Madhu Saha, Michael Paul, Mickey Tam, Jasna Jankovic, and Juergen Stumper. We wish them success in their future work.

- Professors Marc Secanell and Pierre Mertiny have recently published a paper on how flywheels can save energy for the light rail transit. In their study, they concluded that the application of this technology to the Edmonton LRT can lead to 31 % energy and 11 % cost savings. The article quickly gained interest in the community and was featured in ScienceDaily, Metro, Phys.org, Design Engineering, University of Alberta news, and other resources.

- On August 22-25, 2016, ESDL held the first OpenFCST workshop. Detailed information on the framework structure was followed by several hands-on tutorials, during which the guests learned how to generate computational grids, set up and run numerical simulations with OpenFCST, and visualize the results. The workshop was accompanied by a lab tour covering all experimental facilities available at ESDL.

- On August 5, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta held a seminar at which Dr. Secanell presented recent results and developments achieved at ESDLab in the area of "Multi-scale numerical analysis of transport in fuel cells". A number of topics was covered, including fabrication of fuel cell electrodes via inkjet printing, image processing and material reconstruction, multiphase flow models for fuel cells, and application of numerical models for understanding ex-situ experiments.
Dr. Secanell was invited to present the ESDLab work on micro-structural, macro-structural, and channel two-phase flow models at the Gordon Research Conference 2016.

- Lalit Pant receives a Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarships for his research in stochastic reconstruction of porous materials
- Adam Engelbrecht receives a U of A Master's Recruitment Scholarship to work in the ESDLab. Adam will start in September, 2013.
- M. Moore and M. Secanell propose a novel multi-step oxygen reduction reaction model to study replace the commonly used Tafel and Butler-Volmer model for analyzing the ORR reaction. - Prof. M. Secanell has been awarded an NSERC Discovery grant to pursue research in the area of functionally-graded fuel cell electrode design and fabrication and design and optimization of fuel cell flow fields.
- Prof. M. Secanell has been awarded a Small Equipment Grant Program for purchasing equipment to develop a state-of-the-art laboratory for fuel cell fabrication and testing.
- Peter Dobson has been awarded an NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship to continue his research in catalyst layer design. Congratulations Peter!
